Honiton Community Stories
Ana's father Jeremiah O'Brien

ANA’S GRANDFATHER, TIMOTHY O’BRIEN, moved to Dunkeswell and Honiton after enjoying the friendliness of the people and decided to make it his new home post-World War II.

Southern Ireland faced severe unemployment, prompting many, including his son, Jeremiah (Ana’s father), to relocate to England for better opportunities. Jeremiah, who worked for the Post Office in Ireland, arrived in Honiton with only a few shillings.

Jeremiah retained his strong Irish accent throughout his life, even as he assimilated into the community. The O’Brien household was filled with Irish music, hospitality, and frequent visits from priests.

Ana, a journalist and former teacher, fondly recalls the warm and social atmosphere, emphasising her pride in her father’s achievements. She misses the connection to her heritage, especially being an only child but keeps the memory alive with music and fond recollections.

Sharing these stories is important to Ana because it helps younger generations understand how different nationalities and cultures shaped their communities. These immigrants contributed significantly to the local economy and became integral parts of the community, helping to shape its future.
