IN 1972 UGANDAN ASIANS needed housing, and Maggie, along with others, cleaned the neglected camp buildings to make them habitable.
Maggie highlighted the goodwill of the community and the importance of understanding and empathy in aiding traumatised individuals. Despite some organisational challenges, the volunteers’ efforts significantly supported the refugees during their difficult transition.
Dr. Robin, familiar with the camp from its military days, provided medical care, including maternity services, and helped manage tropical diseases. He noted the fortitude of the refugees and collaborated with Dr. Christine Kennaway and Dr. Nigandi.
Despite challenges, there were positive outcomes. The community came together to provide essential services like clothing alterations and cooking. Educational activities were organised to support the children, and local educators eventually took over these roles.
The refugees’ stay at the camp varied, with many moving to places like Leicester, Perth, and Cornwall. Maggie built personal relationships with some families, inviting them into her home. However, she later lost contact with them, a common regret among volunteers.
Maggie and Dr. Robin reminisced about celebrating Diwali with the refugees, highlighting the vibrant and integrating experience.
Dr. Robin shared that his respect for Asians, particularly Indians, was reinforced through this experience. Maggie reflected on how the Ugandan Asians’ ability to envision a future helped them adapt and succeed.
Overall, the experience underscored the importance of empathy, adaptability and cultural sensitivity in supporting displaced individuals and communities.
It is especially poignant to have recorded this interview as Dr Robin sadly passed away in January 2025. We send our condolences to his loved ones.
