A “foreign” presence in Bideford goes back to at least Roman times, when the Roman army set up camp near Bideford.
Sometime in this period the Romans army had a military presence in the area setting up a temporary marching fort at Alverdiscott, 5 miles from Bideford. More information can be found on the Historic England website.
