Ilfracombe School Resources.
We have developed these school activities based on the untold and hidden multi-cultural stories, found by the research volunteers for the Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots project in Ilfracombe (2023-25). Volunteers also worked in Honiton, and schools resources based on their research are available on this website too. .
These activities are aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils in primary and secondary schools, in Devon, Torbay and Plymouth. They will also be of interest to teachers outside Devon, to support teaching on equality, diversity, inclusion, and multicultural history, providing stories from a specific town.
Ilfracombe’s Story Through Time
In these school resources, there is an introduction to the Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots project and then details about this learning resource: its goals, resources, assumptions of student prior knowledge and discussion points for the lesson. There is a list of the resources provided for this work, which is then followed by a lesson outline:
Ilfracombe’s Story in WWII. How one small town in North Devon was impacted by war.
Here there is an introduction to the Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots project and then details about this learning resource: its goals, resources, assumptions of student prior knowledge and discussion points for the lesson. The resources provided for these lessons are also listed.
This is followed by two lesson outlines:
- one for schools located outside of Ilfracombe town and North Devon, which will not be able to plan a visit to Ilfracombe and its Museum.
- and a second for schools in or near to Ilfracombe, which may choose to arrange a visit, to this amazing museum.
We hope you will enjoy using these resources. Please send feedback to us at dde@globalcentredevon.org.uk.
